“So, you don’t think a little more time would get them to talk?” Basil asks me for the second time. It’s the way he tries to see sense and tries to make me see his side.

“No, I need them gone. They’re a threat to my people, they’ve proved it once. I’ll not give them a reason to prove it again. I don’t know what we do next to figure out who or what Milana is, but we will do it on our own.”

Basil nods, releasing a fraught-filled sigh. “As you wish, Your Majesty.”

He stands and lifts his clipboard off the table. Before he leaves the room, he turns back toward me. “Your brother still isn’t well, sire. I thought you should know. Something is ailing him, and I can’t...” he trails off.

“Out with it, Basil,” I grumble.

“Well, sire, it’s like this...I can’t put my finger on why, but I feel he’s changed. His aura feels...darker. It’s as if my gut is telling me we can’t trust him any longer.”

I scoff, sitting back in my chair. “That’s nonsense. Your gut has known to be wrong before, Basil. Will you deny it?”

Basil’s eyes drop to the floor. “No, sire. It’s why I kept it to myself until now. But I implore you to pay attention. The most precious thing to you sleeps in this castle. If danger has found its way in, you must remain alert.”

“Alert to the bad guy you think my brother has become?” Sure, he could be hurt over Milana and I mating, but I don’t think he’s bitter about it. She and I have something they never had. Plus, I’d seen him with a Light Court female at dinner the other night, he seemed fine. And let’s not forget he’d been in the brothel doing Celeste knows what when the resistance member tried to kill him. No, Basil has been wrong before, and he’s wrong now.

“Just keep it in mind, Your Majesty.” He leaves swiftly, and I don’t get to say another thing.

Left behind is a strange feeling of being off-balance.

I can’t say I like the seed he’s planted in me. Familial blood has already dripped down my broadsword’s blade once before, and I can’t say I want to shed anymore. But I will.

For her.
